Blogging for blogging's sake

February 25, 2009

As someone who has never been great at consistently updating their blog, I have to say that now more than ever, (especially with the advent of twitter) people are firing updates to both blog and microblog, all with the idea of ensnaring new visitors (much like trawling the ocean for tuna).

It's something that's rapidly becoming a pet hate of mine, and I've taken to removing certain twitter accounts that I had (until now) previously followed. The amount of lists you can find on the net of 'Designers you MUST follow' are all well and good, but when you get a message every five minutes to some generic link, it kind of defeats the object. I decided to follow these people as I thought we might:

  • share something in common and converse about design
  • learn something from them
  • expand my network of design contacts

But instead it just becomes an annoying distraction in the background on my monitor. The Age of the Blog is a tremendous one, but cheapening it in the name of attracting visitors to your site is not an idea that I'm in favour of, and it's now getting to the point where blogs (those which you would want to read in terms of educational/enjoyable writing) that are worth visiting are the exception, rather than the rule.
